MSET - Modern Studies Educational Trust

What is the Modern Studies Educational Trust?

The Modern Studies Educational Trust (MSET) was established in 1972 to promote Modern Studies-based learning opportunities. The Trust organises a number of national competitions and seeks to recognise excellence in Modern Studies. The Trust has two meetings per year, April and October.

What kinds of learning opportunities does the Trust support?

The Trust makes grants in two main areas:

Modern Studies-based visits. In recent years, the Trust has given support to groups visiting the Houses of Parliament, the European Parliament and the United Nations HQ in New York.

Pupil conferences and MSA branch-led quizzes.

What is meant by recognising 'excellence in Modern Studies'?

Examples of where the Trust recognises Modern Studies-based work of outstanding quality include:

The David Graham Memorial Award - Presented annually at the MSA conference. This award is made to the candidate who receives the highest marks in the Advanced Higher examination.

The Modern Studies Higher Trophy - Presented each year at the MSA conference, this trophy goes to the candidate with the highest mark in the Higher Modern Studies examination.

The S1/S2 Competition - Annually six awards are made to S1/S2 pupils who show evidence of good research and creativity around a Modern Studies issue.

What is the relationship between MSET and MSA?

The relationship is mutually-beneficial: both work together in order to promote Modern Studies although they are separate organisations each with their own constitution. The MSA Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary are ex-officio members of the Trust. The work of the Trust is a standing item on the agenda of the MSA national committee.

Which organisations provide financial support to the Trust?

The main financial supporter of the Trust is Cruden Investments. Imprint Publishing Systems, Wark, Clements and Co. and Pulse Publications also long-standing and highly valued supporters of the Trust.

Who are the Trustees?

The Trustees as of 2001 were: G.Black, H.Blee, C.Cassels, A.Clements, F.Cooney, I.Morrison and K.Wark.
